| Dr. Betty Rigi, L.Ac., Ph.D., is a licensed Acupuncturist who has
been practicing this ancient art for eight years. She started her
practice in Yorba Linda, CA and after practicing in various other
cities such as Laguna Hills and Santa Ana, she has made the city
of Orange home of her practice for the past four years. Dr.
Rigi strives for optimal achievement of pain relief for her
patients. Therefore, patients who visit Chapman Acupuncture
Clinic also have the opportunity to see a Massage Therapist and
Physical Therapist who are a part of Dr. Rigi's staff.
Dr. Rigi,
who earned her Doctorate in Oriental Medicine, explains that Acupuncture
is an excellent treatment alternative for patients with various
conditions who are not experiencing results with traditional Western
Medicine. "My practice is filled with patients who have tried
everything," she says. "Many of these patients achieve
great results with Acupuncture."
The whole of Chinese medicine can be reduced to the theory of Yin
and Yang and their interdependence. The functions of the human body
can be seen as shifts of Yin and Yang through the internal organs.
According to Dr. Rigi, Acupuncture dates back to 5,000 years ago.
Basically, Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles (sometimes
in conjunction with electrical stimulation) on the body's surface,
in order to influence the physiological functioning of the body.
The body has an energy force running throughout it known as Qi.
This Qi consists of all essential life activities that include spiritual,
emotional, mental and the physical aspects of life. "A person's
health is influenced by the flow of Qi in the body, in combination
with the universal forces of Yin and Yang," states Dr. Rigi.
"If the flow of Qi is blocked, Yin and Yang can become unbalanced
and health problems can occur."
Dr. Rigi mixes Chinese and Japanese techniques into her treatment.
She states that the Japanese technique works with good energy therefore
she does not have to insert the needles forcefully. The needles,
which are disposable, are so small that the patient does not feel
any pain. The needles are used once and discarded in accordance
with medical biohazard regulations and guidelines. The needles are
inserted anywhere in the range of 15 degrees to 90 degrees relative
to the skin's surface. Individuals feel a sensation, called deqi,
which is not painful. Dr. Rigi adds that her treatment sessions
range from 20 minutes to one hour.
Dr. Rigi recommends that patients try Acupuncture sooner rather
than later. "I see a lot of individuals who have waited two
years to try it and when they finally do, they feel much better."
